O documento máis antigo que fai referencia a Barreiros é do ano 775 e trátase dunha doazón de terreos do rei Don Silo a varios monxes, a instancias do Abade Esperanta, para que se edificase un mosteiro do cal non se conserva vestixio algún, aínda que tal vez do nome Asperotano, como se coñecía ao mosteiro, derivan algún dos lugares denominados Aspera nas parroquias de San Cosme de Barreiros e San Miguel de Reinante.

Na Idade Media sigue aparecendo o nome de Cibarcos ou Cabarcos como na confirmación que Ordoño II outorga no 916 á igrexa de León, entre as que figura Sancti Justi de Cabarcos.

O Concello de Barreiros está situado no norte da provincia de Lugo, na Comunidade Autónoma de Galicia. Pertence á comarca da Mariña Lucense, concretamente á Mariña Oriental.
Barreiros, que está situado a 90 quilómetros da capital da provincia, está situado á beira do mar Cantábrico, entre os municipios de Foz e Ribadeo, limitando no interior cos concellos de Lourenzá, Trabada e Ribadeo.

A-8: A autovía do Cantábrico que chega a San Sebastián. A Autovía do Cantábrio (A-8) é unha vía terrestre, de doble calzada e sentido, que se extende ao longo da costa cantábrica. Comeza en Bilbao, na unión da AP-8 coa AP-68 e acaba en Baamonde, onde se une á A-6, quedando Barreiros ó seu paso. A saída a Barreiros é a 524:

O Bítere é un opérculo plano, con forma de orella (ovalado), de entre 10 e 20 milímetros, de cor branca por unha das súas caras e de cor alaranxada pola outra. Pódese atopar nalgunhas praias de Barreiros como as de San Bartolo, Remior ou Coto, entre outras.
Camiño Norte de Santiago
A vila de Ribadeo é o punto de arranque do Camiño Norte na súa entrada en Galicia. Saíndo de Ribadeo, a ruta segue o denominado Camiño Vello de Lourenzá para dirixirse a Obe, que conserva intacto un tramo do camiño medieval, e encamiñarse cara a parroquia de Cubelas, pasando polos núcleos da Pastoriza, Vilela, Vilar, Celeiros, A Ponte e Arante.
O Camiño conduce a continuación ó municipio de Barreiros. Este tramo entra polo municipio de Vilamartín Pequeno, un enclave dende o que se divisan un terreo abundante en pastos e gandos, e un pequeno val atravesado polo río Porto Bragán. Nesta fase pode visitarse a Igrexa Parroquial na honra de San Xoán Degolado.

Cruzando o río, comeza unha empinada costa que conduce a Vilamartín Grande. Á man esquerda queda a Capela do Carme, mentres que á dereita do camiño quedan o teleclube e a antiga escola, lado no que tamén se atopan as de Gondán e San Xusto.
Seguindo o camiño, antes de baixar a Gondán, o alto de Vilamartín Grande pode servir ó peregrino de miradoiro, dende onde se divisa unha perspectiva do Val de Cabarcos.
Xa en Gondán (onde hai un albergue para peregrinos), hai unha pequena capela na honra da Virxe do Pilar e, ó lado, unha fonte onde o peregrino pode saciar a súa sede, coñecida como a fonte de Cimadevila.
Logo, o camiño descende ata San Xusto. Despois de cruzar o río Puxigo, están un cruceiro en recordo á capela do Bo Suceso, destruída en 1984, así como a Igrexa Parroquial.
O peregrino deixa Barreiros tras pasar por unha zona de bosques que o leva ata o municipio de Lourenzá, onde atopará o Mosteiro de San Salvador.

A existencia de dúas pousadas, a Casa de Veiga do Camiño Real e a Pousada de Inocente do Curbeiro en San Xusto, son testemuñas da importancia deste Camiño Norte ou Camiño Real.
O tramo do Camiño Norte que transcorre por Barreiros correspóndese co tramo de Ribadeo – Lourenzá e ten uns 30 quilómetros de percorrido, que supoñen unha dificultade alta.
Sitios de interese do Camiño Norte de Santiago ó seu paso por Barreiros:

Igrexa Parroquial de Vilamartín Pequeno.
A Igrexa de San Xoán Degolado é de planta rectangular. No seu exterior, na parede dereita hai unha escaleira que dá acceso ó campanario situado sobre a fachada da capela. No seu interior, pódese observar un retablo neoclásico do século XIX.

Capela do Carme (Vilamartín Grande).
A Capela do Carme (s. XVII) é unha edificación de planta rectangular. A súa fachada está coroada por un pequeno campanario e unha decoración á altura do tellado en forma de chanzos.
Unha vez dentro, podemos fixarnos na súa parede esquerda na que nunha lápida se pode ler: "Esta ermita está fundada en un aniversario Santísimo de una misa cantada con responso y cuatro rezadas en cada día de las festividades de Nuestra Señora de la Merced y del Carmen de cada año a ocho reales de limosna por las cantadas y a tres las rezadas paso la escritura de dotación ante Bernabé de Miranda. Notario en 29 de 7 de diciembre de 1692, años".

Capela do Pilar (Gondán).
A Capela do Pilar, construída en pedra rústica, presenta un pequeno pórtico, con bancos nos seus laterais, coroado por un campanario rematado de finas agullas e unha pequena nave con cerchas de madeira.
No seu interior, existen tres pequenas tallas de madeira en bo estado de conservación que representan a Virxe do Pilar, o apóstolo Santiago e a San Xosé, así como un retablo dórico; obras estas que merecen ser observadas detidamente.
Nas inmediacións da Capela do Pilar, atópase a "Fonte de Cimadevilla" que permite ós peregrinos tomar auga fresca.

Igrexa Parroquial de San Xusto de Cabarcos.
A fachada da Igrexa de San Xusto de Cabarcos esta rematada por unha espadaña de dúas plantas, con dous arcos de medio punto a inferior, e un a superior, así como unha escaleira de acceso a elas no lateral dereito da edificación. A súa construción remóntase a datas próximas ó ano 900, e foi restaurada en 1993.
A visita ó seu interior debe facerse repousadamente, admirando todas as xoias artísticas que contén, entre as que se atopan o retablo barroco do altar principal realizado en madeira de castiñeiro, adornado con columnas salomónicas e abundante decoración alegórica, que data de 1753, con imaxes do Santiago Apóstolo, San Xusto e Pastor (patróns da parroquia), así como outras imaxes dignas de observar detalladamente. Non podemos pasar por alto o púlpito e os dous confesionarios en madeira tallada, realizados por Santiago Candia no ano 1916.

O cruceiro en recordo da Capela do Bo Suceso (San Xusto).
Curioso cruceiro levantado en memoria da Capela do Bo Suceso, que foi destruída en 1984. Sobre un basamento inicial álzase unha columna cadrada coa inscrición "Recordo da Capela Bo Suceso, 1984" e, sobre ela, unha columna cilíndrica cunha urna na súa base que contén unha imaxe no seu interior. Unha cruz forxada sostida por dúas figuras coroa todo o conxunto.

O barrio da Rilleira, pertencente á parroquia de San Xulián de Cabarcos, celebra no Outono a Festa da Castaña, unha boa oportunidade para xuntarse a veciñanza ao mesmo tempo que se pon en valor un produto autóctono como é a castaña.
FESTA DO BÍGARO
A mediados do mes de maio os locais hostaleiros de Barreiros acollen a Festa do Bígaro, ofrecendo tapas e racións deste produto. Unha iniciativa promovida, en parte, pola agrupación de mariscadoras e mariscadores de Barreiros, coa intención de poñer en valor este produto. A cita celébrase paralelamente no veciño Concello de Foz.

FESTA DA TORTILLA
A "Festa da Tortilla" é un certame totalmente consolidado no concello de Barreiros, que no ano 2015 alcanzou a súa XX edición. Trátase dun concurso gastronómico que se organiza ó abeiro da Romaría de San Caetano, que se celebra no espazo natural que recibe o mesmo nome, situado na parroquia de Celeiro de Mariñaos.
No concurso valóranse aspectos como o sabor, a presentación ou a innovación, entre outros. Ademais, no 2015 introduciuse como novidade un concurso máster que premia o concursante que elabore a tortilla en menos tempo.
A festa, organizada pola Irmandade de San Caetano, adoita celebrarse a mediados do mes de agosto e prolóngase durante venres e sábado. O venres comeza á noitiña e adoita haber chourizada, torresmada e acompañamento de música tradicional. Durante a mañá do sábado dispútase o concurso da tortilla e pola tarde organízanse xogos tradicionais. A xornada remata con verbena e co xa típico "baile do farolillo".

Cornería
El alto de Cornería (437 metros), monte limítrofe entre los municipios de Barreiros, Foz y Lourenzá, nos ofrece una magnífica panorámica de la rasa Cantábrica, Celeiro de Mariñaos, con el río Masma a su paso, la parroquia de Vilaronte (Foz), y el área de La Cazolga, en Lourenzá.
En lo que respeta a la vegetación de este enclave, predominan eucaliptos y pinos, entre los que viven especies como el corzo, el zorro, el jabalí o la torcaza.

Cuenta la leyenda que a la muerte de Maeloc, la enorme "piedra preciosa" a la que atribuyen virtudes "todopoderosas", fue enterrada a bastante profundidad en el interior de un baúl de oro macizo, que problablemente contenía otros valores de la época. El motivo de este emplazamiento sería dado por la posición estratégica de la montaña al ser el promontorio más elevado que divisaban los bretones al llegar a las costas gallegas.
